How to craft the perfect cover letter

A cover letter is a document that, along with your CV/resume, can demonstrate why you are the best candidate for the role. A well-written cover letter can make you stand out from other applicants. Here are some tips to help you write the perfect cover letter:

1. Address the letter to a specific person. If you can't find a specific name, you can use a generic salutation such as "Dear Hiring Manager/Recruiter."

2. Use a professional tone. Keep your language professional and avoid using slang or overly casual language.

3. Customize the letter for the job you're applying for. Make sure to mention the specific job you're applying for and how your skills and experience make you a good fit for the position.

4. Keep it concise. Cover letters should be no more than one page in length.

5. Avoid writing a shortened version of your CV/resume.

6. Summarize the successes of your past and present and how that will help your future employer.

7. Proofread carefully. Make sure to proofread your cover letter for spelling and grammar errors. Tools like Grammarly can help.

8. Drop in some research you have done on the employer.

9. Close with a strong closing statement. Thank the employer for considering your application, and express your enthusiasm for the position.

10. Keep it as brief as you can.

Here is an example structure for your cover letter:

[Your name]

[Phone number] | [Email] | [City]

[Date]

Dear [First and last name of the recruiter] or hiring manager,

[Cover who you are and your reasons for applying to the job. Confirm how you found the position.]

[Then highlight critical skills, experience and attributes relevant to the job role. Offer some short examples to highlight your capabilities.]

[The final paragraph should cover your main points and confirm your match for the job. Remind them again why you're the ideal candidate for the position and express your interest in the employer. Finally, thank the hiring manager or recruiter for their time and state that you look forward to hearing from them in the future.]

[Close the cover letter with a formal salutation and your name and contact details.]

Sincerely,

[Your signature, if needed]
